According to bestselling author John C. Maxwell, “Growth is the only guarantee that tomorrow will be better.’” So if you want to make a better tomorrow, you must grow today. Funny thing about growth is that it usually doesn't happen by accident. Our best growth must be intentional. Albert Einstein once said, "We can't solve our problems with the same level of thinking used to create them." Both of these quotes can be taken to support the need for lifelong learning. Change, globalization and the rapid growth of technology are reason that everyone needs to learn how to become a growth oriented individual. If we are not intentionally growing each day, we are losing ground.
Most people stop deliberate learning once they complete their formal education. This is a huge mistake, because it is at that point that real learning begins. While in school, we are in a controlled environment, or if I may, a laboratory. However, real world education begins once the moment caps and gowns are removed. Those that stop learning upon completion of formal education make an erroneous declaration, that I have all the knowledge and skills I need. They operate on the false assumption that academia has given them everything they need to survive and thrive in the real world.
The American academic system is broken and has been for decades because it does not develop the "whole person." I postulate the reasons are multiple; it does not know how, doesn't want to or doesn't care. The bottom line is the disturbing truth; after years in the system and thousand of dollars spent on education, students lack key skills needed to survive.
According to emotional intelligence expert, Robert G. Jerus state, "Educating for life requires developing the whole person. This demands empowering both analytic thinking and emotional intelligence. Without both, learning is incomplete."
Remember; Reflect on this message for six days and don't give it any thought on day 7.
I am excited for the journey we are about to embark.
